A jury of Nintendo’s industry peers has honored the video game company with Game Developers Choice Awards for innovation and game design for Wii Sports™, which comes packed with Nintendo’s hot-selling new Wii™ home system. Nintendo also won an award for writing for The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess.

The awards were presented the evening of March 7 at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. They represent the peak of video game excellence, as voted on by game developers from around the world. The Game Developers Choice Awards Advisory Board also honored legendary Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Wii Sports continues to resonate not only with consumers but also with the creative soul of the industry: the game developers themselves,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Wii is designed to allow creativity to triumph over technical and financial barriers, and Wii Sports is a perfect example of how a great idea can succeed on its own.”

Wii Sports and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess were nominated for five awards in four categories.

This is an Excerpt of the Preview of the Nintendo Wii game Princes Of Persia: Rival Swords by AMN

At heart this new adventure is one fans of the series have seen before. Once again (or for the first time, depending on one’s point of view) the prince is on his way home to Babylon alongside Kaileena, Empress of Time. Nothing ever goes smoothly for the prince, of course, so it’s only a matter of time until those pesky Sands of Time (as seen in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time) are unleashed, bringing forth the dreaded Dark Prince. While the storyline is the same as in Two Thrones, the supposed allure of this new edition of the game revolves around the new motion controls. A series of images and video clips from Rival Swords show how a trusty shake of a nunchuk or a swing of a remote enable the prince to interact with the world around him by snaring foes, bounding off walls, and bounding off snared foes. While some gamers may question the idea of “shoehorning” motion controls into a game that was designed to utilize a traditional controller, games such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess show that such a task can be done well. On the other hand, games such as Need For Speed: Carbon do not provide much of a role model for standard control schemes that wish to develop into shakin’ and swingin’ Wii titles.

The user starts playing a real copy of the Zelda: Twilight Princess, but doesn’t have the nunchuck plugged when the game is booting up. Before plugging in the nunchuck the user switches the disc with a backed up game, then plugs in the nunchuck, and the game plays well with the Backed Up game
