I’m completely in love with Trauma Centre: Second Opinion. It’s urgent, tense, dramatic, unique, extremely difficult and surprisingly varied, an excellent Wii game and an excellent puzzle game. For anyone suffering from scepticism and uncertainty about the validity of the Wii’s control system and doubting developers’ abilities to create games to live up to its potential, Trauma Centre: Second Opinion is the perfect remedy.

SPOnG Score: B++
Trauma Center: Under the Knife is both delightfully innovative and frustratingly difficult. But in the best possible sense. It’s a game that you will want to show your non-gaming friends and family in order to entice them into your funny little hobby. It’s the best example to date of Nintendo’s much hyped ‘new ways to play’ marketing guff made real.
The game is fundamentally a joy to play, solidly designed and more addictive than [insert name of non-branded narcotic for comic effect here]. It sets up a fun puzzle for you to crack and makes you want to try over and over and over and over until you solve it. It does all this in the guise of a fun little cartoony story about being a trainee doctor who has crushes on his nurses and, it transpires, turns out to be some kind of ninja uber-surgeon.

If the concept is something that appeals to you, Trauma Center: Second Opinion is not a game to be missed. The story may be secondary to the gameplay, but the gameplay that is there is a pure joy. The controls are a shining example of using the Wii to its full potential, even surpassing the original DS Trauma Center. While it can be made easy, those looking for a true challenge will appreciate the higher difficulty modes. Long story short, Trauma Center: Second Opinion is a top-notch launch title for the Wii, even for those who have already played the DS game. Given the infamously short print runs of the developer Atlus, I would highly recommend picking this up as soon as possible. That is, if you like fun.

Although the original Trauma Center is a fantastic game, I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone, due to the extreme difficulty. Second Opinion fixes that issue while providing options to make the game even harder for veteran players. It also provides a dozen or so new missions (or about 1/3 more content) and interesting, though not perfect, Wii controls that are fun for everyone to learn. If you’re tired of launch titles that feel like tech demos or mini-game collections, Trauma Center is just what the doctor ordered. (Sorry!)
