Spore Developer Chris Hecker Apologizes For Calling the Wii a “Piece of Sh*t”

“I don’t know who has read the internet, yesterday. In a [unintelligible] panel I said a bunch of things. I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top—on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now.

When I’m on stage, I’m me. I’m talking talk from me. From me. I’m not representing EA or Maxis.

I want to make two things perfectly clear.

I do not think the Wii is a piece of shit. Nintendo needs to be applauded for trying to interface on the controller front, the user interface front, on making games accessible, on making a console that you don’t need to mortgage your house to afford.

Secondly, it’s totally obvious—and I’m sorry that I implied otherwise—that everyone at Nintendo is passionate at making great games. Some of the games give me hope that we will be seen as an art form on par with movies and books.”

This is an excerpt from the Review of the Nintendo Wii Game WarioWare: Smooth Moves by Cubed3

Yes, the multi-player is supposed to add a lot of value to game (playing darts passes the time nicely enough, but flinging the controller between people as you complete many micro-games in a row grew old in the GC version…), but recalling the situation found with the GameCube edition, getting three friends that want to look like complete idiots seems difficult and the one-player side alone does not justify the £39.99 price tag. Sure, there are nice options like being able to watch video sequences repeatedly, beat your highest scores on the micro games (which really do go crazily fast the longer you play!) or take part in extended mini-games (including a gun shooting one, block balancing puzzle game and a Breakout-style affair that uses a ping-pong paddle controlled completely by the Wii-mote to bounce the ball through barriers), but still this probably would have been much more appealing at a lower price-point.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — THQ Inc. (Nasdaq: THQI) today announced plans to bring Ratatouille, based on the summer 2007 film from Disney*Pixar, to gamers of all ages around the world. The game is in development across 11 systems, including Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, Nintendo’s Wii™ video game console, Nintendo GameCube™, Game Boy® Advance, Nintendo DS™, Windows PC and Mac, as well as wireless devices. Ratatouille will mark the most comprehensive simultaneous cross-platform launch in THQ’s history and is scheduled to coincide with the worldwide release of the highly anticipated film.

“Disney*Pixar films have consistently captivated audiences of all ages with their imaginative and memorable characters, visually stunning animation, and unparalleled story-telling,” said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “THQ has shipped more than 25 million units of Disney*Pixar video games to date, illustrating the success of our long-standing relationship and dedication to the Disney*Pixar business.”

About the Ratatouille Video Game

In the game, players will assume the role of Remy, a young rat whose love for great food puts him at odds with the needs of his family. Fans will be able to relive some of the film’s most thrilling moments and experience the sights, sounds and most importantly, the smells, of Paris a la Remy across a multitude of gaming systems. Players will instantly recognize the storyline, characters and key locations of Ratatouille, as they engage in a series of unique mini-games, cooking challenges and head-to-head multiplayer. Ratatouille will allow players to create culinary masterpieces, evade detection from dangerous and often hungry enemies, and brave the perils of the dinner-rush in this senses-shattering journey to fulfill Remy’s life-long dream of becoming a great chef.

THQ’s Heavy Iron Studios is leading development for Ratatouille across THQ’s Studio System. In addition, THQ Wireless is developing a suite of wireless content including games, wallpapers and ring-tones based on Ratatouille.

About the Ratatouille Movie

In Disney*Pixar’s upcoming animated-adventure, Ratatouille, a rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely — and certainly unwanted — visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy’s passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

Remy finds himself torn between his calling and passion in life or returning forever to his previous existence as a rat. He learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef.

Crash of the Titans was announced
IGN’s Matt Casamassina researched this rumor and this was the results:

“The rumor started shortly after a Vivendi-held European games summit. Within hours, an overseas website was reporting that Crash Bandicoot would hit Wii sometime in 2007. We called Vivendi for clarification and it turns out that the rumor is false. During a question and answer session, a Vivendi representative was apparently asked about next generation development and replied loosely that the publisher was looking into all consoles. The rumor snowballed from there. A Vivendi spokesperson flatly denied the Crash Bandicoot Wii rumor, calling it “rubbish.”

The June issue of Out, a magazine focusing on gay and lesbian culture, is calling out the Nintendo Wii game’s hero, the boyish elf Link, as a perfect 10.

From the mag: “When darkness enshrouds the land, Nintendo’s sexy farm-boy-turned-wolf sets out to save the day in this upcoming game. His weapons: a sword, a bow, arrows, and kick-ass grooming skills.

This isn’t the first time Link has been associated with gay culture–he was the inspiration for Xandir P. Wifflebottom, the homosexual video game character in Comedy Central’s Drawn Together.
