It’s also a two year old game and certainly looks it, with muddy last-gen graphics and some disturbing clipping in the cut-scenes as the Prince’s spaghetti hair cuts through his shoulders. Given its age, you can pick it up for next to nothing on the Gamecube or, better yet, buy it as part of a trilogy pack for PS2 or PC. While the Wii version is a good game and takes to its new control scheme well enough to justify the port, it’s just not sufficiently different to recommend a purchase, especially if you can source it elsewhere.

The game just pips an above average score, which I may regret. If you’ve got some patience to trudge through some hemorrhage inducing battle sequences, you may find some enjoyment from the basic platforming, perhaps if you find Prince of Persia a little intimidating. The game is simply wholly unambitious, but to its credit, doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. A move tie-in.

This game is without a doubt great fun to play. Precision, timing and patience are the keys to succeeding and it’ll definitely test that. If you haven’t played this The Two Thrones on the last generation of consoles, you might want to try this version out. If you’ve already played it, well, all you’re missing out on are the Wii controls, really. I’m giving this one a thumbs up.

Ultimately, Rival Swords is still a great action-adventure game — one that you should play at some point if this is the type of game you’re interested in. And it plays fine on Wii, so as an experiment to see if this type of game could work on Wii — apart from the odd blood removal and rating shift from Mature to Teen — it’s decently successful. But as a product that costs $50 in a store, it’s tough to recommend given its sub-$20 little brother.

Prince of Persia: Rival Swords is a good game that doesn?t disappoint. Unfortunately the only real draw it has is the specifically Wii-tailored controls and even those are only good for when in combat. In addition the graphics aren?t improved, even though the Wii has more power and Ubisoft has had over a year to make enhancements. It doesn?t help that the game costs $50, when you can get more or less the same game on the GameCube for less than half the price. It really depends on whether you want to spend more money just to play the game using the Wii’s controls.

Fundamentally, Prince of Persia Rival Swords is a good game. The question, though, is whether Rival Swords is worth playing over the GameCube version of Two Thrones, which by this time is only $20. There’s some added content that mostly equates to a few extra buzz saws lining the walls, so it really comes down to whether the motion controls are worth $30, which they aren’t. In fact, the most that can be said for the motion controls is that they stay out of the way. In all other regards, Rival Swords is the same game as Two Thrones, so you’d be much better served just picking up the older version and squandering the $30 you saved on some kind of hardcore Prince of Persia action figure.

The bottom line is that Rival Swords is the same game as The Two Thrones with added Wii controls that sometimes better the experience and sometimes worsen it, but if I had to choose, I’d take a traditional control setup to the new gesture system. Bearing that in mind, I’m telling you to pick up the GameCube version of Two Thrones and play it on Wii if you need a fix of Prince of Persia. It’s a lot cheaper and you aren’t sacrificing the gore factor, if that’s your thing.
At the same time, I’m conceding that if you do buy Rival Swords for Nintendo’s next-generation console, you won’t be walking away with a bad game. It is nearly as fun and engaging today as it was when it was first released in December of 2005 for the other systems.
I have, however, scored it significantly lower on Wii than on the other systems. I’ve done that not only because it’s a year-late port, but also because the newly added controls actually lessen the end gameplay endeavor and because Ubisoft has otherwise brought nothing new to the table, choosing to completely ignore the prospect of adding new content or using Wii’s added horsepower to its fullest.
