Capcom gives (strange) final name to Treasure Island Z

SAN MATEO, Calif — March 16, 2007 — Capcom® , a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced its first original title exclusively for the Wii™ video game system, Zack & Wiki™: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure, an innovative, full-length puzzle adventure game that utilizes the unique control mechanics of the Wii Remote™ and challenges gamers to “play different.” Capcom plans to release Project Treasure Island Z (Working Title) this fall.

“Innovation has been the cornerstone of Capcom’s successful history ,” said Jack Symon, director, brand marketing, Capcom Entertainment. “By introducing a whole new level of interactivity, this title reinforces our commitment to pushing the limits on how people view and play games.”

Legend has it that a revered pirate named Barbaros once stole the world’s treasure and hid it on a mysterious island. Though no one knows of its exact location, stories about the untold riches that lay in wait have been passed down through the ages, driving pirates from all walks of life to pursue the alluring prizes. One of these treasure seekers, a young apprentice pirate named Zack happens upon a mysterious talking skull, the skull of Barbaros himself. Barbaros promises to reveal the key to the island, if Zack will help to lift the curse he is under.

Players will explore a variety of wondrous environments and stages, solving puzzles and interacting with the world in search of vast riches and the ultimate pursuit of becoming the greatest pirate the world has ever seen. Inventive gameplay mechanics and controller movements allow players to move and open objects, transform items, unlock new pathways and navigate through perilous stages based on a variety of themes including a jungle, ice temple, volcanic caves and more, each with multiple sub-areas. Players will use the Wii Remote controller in various ways - rotate handles, turn keys to open doors, play a piccolo and much more in order to solve the progressively difficult puzzle stages and collect key items that will lead to the legendary pirate ship.

This is an excerpt from the Preview of the Nintendo Wii game Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by 1up

More About: Preview, Nintendo, Wii, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,

The title of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean game, At World’s End, is a bit of a misnomer. While it holds the third movie’s moniker, the game will actually cover not only the third film’s storyline but Dead Man’s Chest’s as well. This could either result in a lengthy pirate adventure or a rushed effort to cram in every major plot point.

Like we mentioned in our last preview, the game visits many of the film’s locations and, not surprisingly, animated cut-scenes reenact pivotal moments in the movies. Unfortunately, the main trio isn’t voiced by the original actors (though some of the supporting cast is), but the sound-alikes are convincing. And while the Wii version of the game doesn’t sport the same 1080p support and graphics that the 360 version does, it allows players to go back to any finished level and replay it with another character from the game (minus the cut-scenes).

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End for Wii seems to be easy to pick up and play so it may be enjoyed by some of the fans of the Pirates saga when it comes out a few days before the movie.

This is an excerpt from the Preview of the Nintendo Wii game Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by IGN

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End wiiPirates of the Caribbean: At World's End wiiPirates of the Caribbean: At World's End wii

The Wii incarnation of At World’s End is similar to the PS2, PC and PSP versions except with a new control scheme designed for Nintendo’s remote. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 builds, meanwhile, take players to the same locations and introduce many of the same characters, but are completely different. The title follows the second and upcoming third movie in the Pirates trilogy and gamers will at one time or another control Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann as they battle cannibalistic tribals and sail the seas. Although the adventure travels gamers through the events of the film, they will also play through scenarios not seen in the movies, which Disney Interactive Studios feels will help flesh out the overall storyline.

Disney only showcased a few key areas from the Wii version of the game — all from the second movie. It wasn’t allowed to unveil any bits from the upcoming film, although these areas will, of course, be featured in the final product. There will be 10 or 11 different stages to play through, of which we saw two: the tropical cannibal-infested island and the shipyard. The Wii game runs in progressive-scan and 16:9 widescreen modes, and it never drops from 60 frames per second

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End Video Games to Set Sail on Consoles and Handheld Systems This Summer

BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Familiar pirates will soon be fighting notorious villains on the decks and riggings of massive ships; exploring towns and jungle-filled islands; and avoiding perils at sea in adventures taking place on popular video game platforms. Scheduled for release on May 22, 2007, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End video games from Disney Interactive Studios invite players to “live and die by the sword” as they venture to the worlds of the films and beyond while playing as Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.

Inspired by the events and locations of the upcoming film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” and last year’s blockbuster film “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End video games will be available for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, the Wii™, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Windows PC and Nintendo DS™.

“Fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise will experience adventures inspired by the second and third films while going far beyond the events of those films,” said Craig Relyea, vice president of marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. “With the action, excitement, unforgettable characters and expansive locations from the blockbuster films, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End will be the definitive ‘Pirates’ video game experience for fans. Our games go beyond the films to introduce legendary pirates, new locations and unique endings that will satisfy the pirate in each of us.”

While providing action that is distinctive of the franchise, the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End video games will feature gameplay that takes advantage of each platform. The “next-generation” console games have innovative dueling controls as well as special moves used to outwit and defeat enemies. In addition, the Wii version takes advantage of the Wii Remote for swinging and thrusting motions that are similar to fighting with a sword.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End games for consoles, Windows PC and the PSP system are rated T for Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and are being developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software. The Nintendo DS version of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End has an ESRB rating of E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older, and is being developed by Amaze Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment.

About the “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” film

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” picks up where the record-breaking 2006 smash hit left off, with our heroes Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) allied with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones’ locker. With the terrifying ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, and its commander Davy Jones under the control of the East India Trading Company, there is havoc on the Seven Seas. Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, the heroic trio must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Now headed beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in a final titanic battle – as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire future of the freedom-loving Pirate way hangs in the balance. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, our beloved cast sets sail again on a fresh new adventure in May 2007.

This is An excerpt from a GameSpot interview with Monkey Ball producer Toshihiro Nagoshi:

Toshihiro Nagoshi: The two primary aspects of the title are the main game and party games (minigames), and we’ve taken the same direction as in the previous Monkey Ball series where the main game consists of puzzle levels, and we’ve created really fun party games to take advantage of the Wii Remote. We’ve created a variety of party games you can enjoy with friends through multiplayer.

Before working on Super Monkey Ball, producer Toshihiro Nagoshi was involved with Daytona USA, F-Zero GX, and many others.

GS: How will the bosses figure into the experience?

TN: The main game consists of several worlds, and each world features its boss character, which is a new feature for the series. It is certainly amusing to complete puzzle-based stages, but we decided to include boss battle levels as a feature that further boosts the player’s motivation to play the game.

GS: What will the game’s story be about?

TN: The story is like: One day, treasures are suddenly taken away from the village where AiAi and his friends are, and they go and retrieve them. On their quest to retrieve the treasure, they face many challenges in the form of different puzzle worlds like tropical islands, snowy tundras, Egyptian deserts, to even pirate ships.

GS: Are there any new characters (heroes or villains) in the game?
