Thi is an excerpt from the Review of the Nintendo Wii game Excite Truck by Cubed3
ExciteTruck may not live up to its amazing NES and N64 predecessors, but it certainly holds its own on the Wii so far, proving to be a far better racing experience than both Ubisoft’s efforts, Disney’s Cars and EA’s Need for Speed: Carbon…and yet it feels incomplete to some degree. With solid sales around the world so far, hopefully Nintendo will green light a sequel so Monster Games can show us what they are really made of. Brilliant fun, nonetheless, but it has short-lived appeal…

This is an Excerpt of the Preview of the Nintendo Wii game Princes Of Persia: Rival Swords by AMN
At heart this new adventure is one fans of the series have seen before. Once again (or for the first time, depending on one’s point of view) the prince is on his way home to Babylon alongside Kaileena, Empress of Time. Nothing ever goes smoothly for the prince, of course, so it’s only a matter of time until those pesky Sands of Time (as seen in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time) are unleashed, bringing forth the dreaded Dark Prince. While the storyline is the same as in Two Thrones, the supposed allure of this new edition of the game revolves around the new motion controls. A series of images and video clips from Rival Swords show how a trusty shake of a nunchuk or a swing of a remote enable the prince to interact with the world around him by snaring foes, bounding off walls, and bounding off snared foes. While some gamers may question the idea of “shoehorning” motion controls into a game that was designed to utilize a traditional controller, games such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess show that such a task can be done well. On the other hand, games such as Need For Speed: Carbon do not provide much of a role model for standard control schemes that wish to develop into shakin’ and swingin’ Wii titles.

EA should be commended for the Wii version of Need For Speed Carbon. Instead of porting it over without much thought, they took the time to get something working that took advantage of the Wii’s strengths. The result is a very good game that you should take a look at if you’re on the hunt for post-launch software.

When we reviewed Need for Speed: Carbon last month on the Xbox 360 we were a little disappointed by the fact that the game wasn’t all that different from Need for Speed: Most Wanted. However, as an arcade racer Need for Speed: Carbon on the XBox 360 was still a great arcade title with some brilliant online features. Carbon on the Wii is one of the only EA titles available for the launch of Nintendo’s machine but keen racing fans may be better off picking the game up on a different platform or waiting for Excite-Truck to make an appearance early next year.

Those of you who have caught the adverts for this game on TV will have seen its trademark track, the canyon race. Whilst pointless, tedious and not very much fun, they do provide something a little bit different. As is the case with most Need for Speed games, the challenge this one poses is a very significant one. As you move into the latter stages you really do get tested by some very tough racing opponents. Whilst this is normally a welcome challenge in the game, when you have to battle with over zealous opponents and a mangled control system it all just gets a bit too much. Add into that the graphics which are just about good enough in comparison to the PS2 and XBOX versions and a soundtrack that instantly makes you want to hit mute and you have a fairly offensive game.

Ultimately it is difficult to recommend the Wii version of Need For Speed: Carbon. Ardent fans of the series may well be better served with one of the other modern console ports of the game, although die-hard Speed enthusiasts may want to rent the game to see how EA shoveled motion controls into a game designed for the traditional control stick. Wii owners looking for a solid racing title that makes fantastic use of the remote’s motion controls ought look elsewhere, as Carbon just doesn’t hold up against similar genre titles in the Wii library

Previous Need for Speeds have dramatically changed the way we look at racing games. Most recently Underground moved the needle on presentation, and Most Wanted revived the gameplay ideas that made Hot Pursuit 2 so beloved. While Carbon is peppered with clever little ideas, ultimately it falls victim to EA’s insistence on annually iterating the franchise. It refines previous ideas but lacks that big “wow” factor we’ve seen in the past. It’s thoroughly, thoroughly competent and shouldn’t be overlooked, but it really is “Need for Speed Again.”
