Disney’s Meet the Robinsons should satisfy anyone who has the urge to explore the Robinsons’ futuristic world. The game won’t blow you away, but Wilbur’s gadgets are fun to use. There’s also plenty to do between gathering blueprints, playing minigames, and getting through the puzzles and bosses in the dungeonlike environments.

Meet the Robinsons is – at its heart – a movie/game. The gameplay is basic, but it takes inspiration from more fleshed out titles, and it all works well. The license is the primary focus of the title (obviously), so you’ll spend just as much time living in the world, interacting with the characters, and watching movie-inspired cuts-scenes as you will engaging, nail-biting gameplay, but that’s part of what makes the sub-genre work. Meet the Robinsons has the overall look of the film, the original voice actors make an appearance, and as an extension to the movie it’s a fine choice for younger gamers or families. There’s no true Wii functionality added in, and the only difference between versions is the poly count and graphical detail. There’s very little true innovation in the design, but a mix of entertaining gadgets keeps the experience from becoming mundane. All in all Meet the Robinsons is a solid effort, lacks some of the overall polish of games with a higher budget and longer development time, but it fulfills its goal of tying the film world to an interactive medium; an exact definition to what we consider a “good” game.

Meet the Robinsons is very much an adventure game, and not a platformer, although the level constructions may look that way sometimes. Developer Avalanche really wanted to keep the emphasis away from timing jumps and on the fun of exploring the Robinson world. The controls clearly reflect this notion because jumping is automated and most interaction is done through a context sensitive button. One control feature that is specific to Wii is the ability to target enemies separately from what you are attacking. This is done by flicking the Nunchuck and pointing with the Wii Remote.
While most who consider themselves gamers will scoff and eagerly dismiss this game, Meet the Robinsons looks to be one of the better movie-to-game adaptations.

Meet the Robinsons will include the same celebrity talent seen in the film, such as Tom Sellick as the brilliant do-gooding inventor Mr. Robinson and Harlan Williams as Carl, Wilbur’s helpful robot sidekick. Buena Vista promises a solid amount of replay value, as well, with the large number of gadgets and a raft of collectible action figures that you can uncover and then examine in detail in a viewing mode. From what we saw of the game, it looks to include a lot more depth than you’d normally expect to see in a game based on a kids’ animated movie. Meet the Robinsons will hit shelves a couple of weeks before the movie in mid-March.
