Thi is an excerpt from the Review of the Nintendo Wii game Excite Truck by Cubed3
ExciteTruck may not live up to its amazing NES and N64 predecessors, but it certainly holds its own on the Wii so far, proving to be a far better racing experience than both Ubisoft’s efforts, Disney’s Cars and EA’s Need for Speed: Carbon…and yet it feels incomplete to some degree. With solid sales around the world so far, hopefully Nintendo will green light a sequel so Monster Games can show us what they are really made of. Brilliant fun, nonetheless, but it has short-lived appeal…

New York in ’78 was the coolest place on the planet. I was new to the Big Apple, just a country boy looking to make it good. In just a few weeks it felt like home. From New Jersey to Queens, from the Bronx down to Battery this was my patch, my backyard. 28 years later and the city sparkled like new but underneath, the filth was still there, and I had vengeance crawling inside me.

But before he can get his answer, his invention is stolen by the dastardly Bowler Hat Guy and his diabolical hat – and constant companion – Doris. Cars features a truly huge game world with dozens of racing events and mini-games, so there is plenty to do. The presentation is also nice, with good-looking character models and lots of voice acting from the movie’s stars, including Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, and yes, Larry the Cable Guy. There is plenty of bonus content, such as high-quality video clips from the movie. All of these things would make the game easy to recommend except that the racing gameplay at its core is simply too frustrating, the controls too inconsistent, and the races far too long. I found myself cursing at the game on multiple occasions – and this is supposed to be targeted at kids? I know they’re not weaksauce gamers, but they’re not exactly the patient type, either. Considering that the tilting control scheme is the only Wii-specific feature, you may find that the GameCube version (also playable on Wii!) is easier to handle. For now, Excite Truck is still by far the best racing game on Wii.

The picture above is apparently the result of a Wii Sports bowling mishap by a certain Tyler, who we hear can lift small cars with merely his right hand. Tyler, who normally bowls with a clockwise spin, and eats a dozen eggs for breakfast every morning, tried to mix it up with a bit of counterclockwise action, to the disastrous effect as seen above. While we’re still pretty dang skeptical of the possibility of such a feat, Tyler’s friend is quite adamant about the honesty of the story and the un-stagedness of the picture, so we’ve decided to take him at his word and write it off as just another Festivus miracle. Oh, and just for the record: after popping the battery cover back on, the Wiimote worked just fine, continuing the current streak of zero Wiimote casualties in related incidents.

This is an excerpt from the Review of the Nintendo Wii Game Cars by IGN
Since the main element in Cars is of course the driving, the core gameplay ends up dictating the appeal of the game almost entirely. After all, a huge world to explore and tons of events are well and good, but they mean nothing without spot-on control. Though we wouldn’t go as far to say that Cars controls poorly, it isn’t as tight as we were expecting. Gameplay is based on simple controls, primarily focused on acceleration, braking and drifting with the ability to jump off the ground and pull off a few added moves as a bonus. The sense of speed is a bit slow overall though, and the drifting is cause for a few more frustrating control issues. Initiating a drift is as simple as holding down the designated button, but it’s often ended far too quickly.
A more slippery feeling similar to Burnout or Super Mario Kart would have worked perfectly, and in the end it feels like the cars were grounded too much to get the true feel that was desired. Players will constantly struggle to stay in drift mode. In addition, a drift won’t work if the car is braking, so it is very difficult to manipulate the speed and direction of the car when engaged. Time and time again we would enter into the drift, begin to feather the control and then attempt to brake, sending our car into the rail or off the track. The overall feel that was needed (and expected) just never came through, and in the end we’re left with a game that controls decent on a fundamental level, but doesn’t excel in the areas Rainbow Studios is famous for, and that’s a disappointment.
