This is an excerpt from the Preview of the Nintendo Wii game Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by 1up

More About: Preview, Nintendo, Wii, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,

The title of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean game, At World’s End, is a bit of a misnomer. While it holds the third movie’s moniker, the game will actually cover not only the third film’s storyline but Dead Man’s Chest’s as well. This could either result in a lengthy pirate adventure or a rushed effort to cram in every major plot point.

Like we mentioned in our last preview, the game visits many of the film’s locations and, not surprisingly, animated cut-scenes reenact pivotal moments in the movies. Unfortunately, the main trio isn’t voiced by the original actors (though some of the supporting cast is), but the sound-alikes are convincing. And while the Wii version of the game doesn’t sport the same 1080p support and graphics that the 360 version does, it allows players to go back to any finished level and replay it with another character from the game (minus the cut-scenes).

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End for Wii seems to be easy to pick up and play so it may be enjoyed by some of the fans of the Pirates saga when it comes out a few days before the movie.

Wii HD in the Future??

Nintendo Of America president Reggie Fils-Aime commented an interesting quote in a USA Today article.

“Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday,” Fils-Aime said.

The key phrase here is “at the start.” Wiis currently cannot play DVD movies, but Nintendo has already confirmed that a new model will be able to in the latter half of 2007 (in Japan at least). If we apply this logic to the “high-definition capability” statement, it seems that this might only be a temporary setback as well.

So there could be a major upgrade of the Wii to a next-gen HD format as well as a HD firmware update of 720p/1080i/1080p support once the format war becomes more clear.

IGN has some details on a Nintendo Wii version of Mahjon:

Officially titled Mahjong Taikai Wii, this game is the latest entry in Koei’s long-running Mahjong Taikai series. Mahjong Taikai offers a realistic game of mahjong, minus the frills of games like Koei’s own Jan Sangoku Musou, a mahjong title that lets you face off against generals from the Dynasty Warriors series. You won’t find any long-dead generals here, but there is a cast of characters, each with his own set of unique mahjong rules.

While one of the selling points of the PS3 version of the game, Mahjong Taikai IV, is 1080p support, the big feature for the Wii version appears to be single handed play. The game can be played exclusively with the Wiimote’s D-pad and A and B buttons. Too bad this isn’t a port of one of those classic Sega Saturn strip mahjong games.

Playing as some of the most revered Marvel characters, gamers will embark on a dangerous journey across exotic terrain and well-known comic book locations like Atlantis, the Shield Heli-Carrier and the Skrull home world in an attempt to defy the world’s most notorious Super Villains. Created by Raven Software, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance lets players control the most powerful Super Hero alliance the world has ever known.
