Nintendo Wii game ORB

Nintendo Wii Orb is an action-adventure game set in a huge fantasy world called Delphire. Long ago, the mercenary army of Kulon raged a deadly war with the good people of the land, killing all men, women and children that crossed their path. However, while that was long ago, the army is at it again.

One of the Kulon’s most fierce warriors has crowned himself ruler and has forged a dangerous plot to kidnap one of the people’s “guardians of faith,” a member of the sect called Imanti.

The army of Kulon successfully abducts this guardian of faith late one night, but the Imanti’s three students – two boys and one teenage girl, Mahten, Dyces and Simique, respectively – won’t stand for it.

The main storyline of Orb follows the three’s adventure as they journey through the diverse world of Delphire in search of their teacher. Their quest seems pretty epic too. For example, Crossbeam describes their adventure as one that takes them through many locales, including a variety of towns and cities, a frozen wasteland and tropical beaches. Of course, like any other adventure game, we expect Orb will explore many other stylized zones to boot.

The adventure itself features three different versions, per se. Each character has its own version of the story gamers can play through. For the most part, the storyline in each character’s single-player adventure is the same. However, these adventures are still quite different, Crossbeam promises.

Each character will experience, on the whole, completely different events. They’ll encounter different people, see different places and so forth. And when one character explores one area, another might explore that same area at a totally different time and under different circumstances. What’s more, when talking and interacting with NPCs, each character will learn different information.

The focus on these three characters and their storylines crisscrossing seems to be big. For instance, when playing as Mahten, gamers will certainly come into contact with both Dyces and Simique.

When these characters are not interacting directly with each other, they will be in entirely different places in the world.

We were looking around for official comment on the PlayStation 3 controller announcement from Nintendo executives who had been surprisingly quiet on the issue, and we came up with this gem from Nintendo presiedent Satoru Iwata.

As you’ll know, Sony tried to take a bite out of Nintendo’s giant pie of glory by adding functionality to its controller that the layman might mistake as comparable to that of the Wii.

“Actually before they made the announcement we already anticipated that they might do that, so I had to laugh. Even though I was laughing, it was with a grim face, I should add,” Iwata told the Seattle Times.

“Having said that, please know that putting the motion-sensor technology into the classic-style controller is one thing. Putting the motion-sensor technology into the Wii remote as well as the ‘nunchuck’ controller, where you can use both hands freely and independently, this is quite another thing.”

Of course, the actual functionality of the Wii and the PlayStation 3 controllers is a world apart.

The PlayStation 3 offers unexplained ‘motion-sensing’ technology, whereas the Wii boasts full recognition of the controllers movement, tilt, angle and placement.

Bill Gates has been chatting to MTV.com this week about matters of the gaming variety.
Revealing his doubts about Sony PS· and Nintendo’s Wii moves towards motion-sensing controllers.
There’s room for innovation here, but moving that controller around, it’s something that’s not mainstream for most games,” he stated. “It’s tough because sometimes you move the controller, and you don’t [want] to fly into the ground. You just want to put the controller down. People aren’t that good at totally standing still. Even pilots actually sit in a chair when they do their flying. So there’s a lot to be learned about these controllers.

Nintendo has underlined that it will ready six million Wii hardware units for the console’s launch period, confirming off the record briefings to retailers during the latter part of last week.

“The company plans to ship six million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007,” said Nintendo in a statement to shareholders. The company also confirmed the pricepoints mooted of late.

“Following its overwhelming debut at E3 2006, Nintendo today announced the current fiscal year unit shipment forecast for its new home game system, Wii. Nintendo also confirmed that the price of the Wii system, which incorporates unique freehand control, will not exceed $250 in America, or 25,000 yen in Japan.”

The June issue of Out, a magazine focusing on gay and lesbian culture, is calling out the Nintendo Wii game’s hero, the boyish elf Link, as a perfect 10.

From the mag: “When darkness enshrouds the land, Nintendo’s sexy farm-boy-turned-wolf sets out to save the day in this upcoming game. His weapons: a sword, a bow, arrows, and kick-ass grooming skills.

This isn’t the first time Link has been associated with gay culture–he was the inspiration for Xandir P. Wifflebottom, the homosexual video game character in Comedy Central’s Drawn Together.
