The hopefully non-prophetically named Singe did a little bit of research on Wii power consumption since the thing is on 24/7. Turns out that Nintendo’s nifty new console isn’t just light on power use, it’s super light.
Wii:
- In Standby Mode: 10w
- Idle @ Wii menu: 17w
- Running a Wii Game (Test with Zelda / Trauma Center) in 480i: 17w
37″ Sharp Aquos LCD TV:
- In Standby Mode: 40w
- Turned on: 180w
XBox 360:
- In Standby Mode: 2w
- Idle @ Dashboard: ~140w

DIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ds2 is going to kick serious arse
salute nintendo they care about envirament
low energy high performance in a tiny box
if you have a desktop pc at home plus a 360and a tv your sucking serious juice
again i salute you nintendo
yep wii are the tree huggers!
Kyle you aren’t funny… but I agree…
i understand usa doesnt give a shite its destoying the world but all others do
usa vs everyone else on envirament issues stubben usa wont cut fual use and allso wont stop calling there lame natiolal sport they play with there hands football
yip yip yip
i loathe you cubeboy.
that sure is why the usa boasts the largest envirmental protection agencies in the world - look things up before you make comments… thats sad dude
Not only is this helpful environmentally, it will also look very nice on your electricity bill. Or if you aren’t the one responsible for paying the bill, your parents will appreciate the difference.
cool
Out of curiosity, what do these Watts mean in terms of cost? Like, how much do we save per hour with the Wii’s 17W vs the 360’s 160W?
Oh the US cares about destorying the world, Get it right it’s the big businesses in the US that don’t care about destroying the world. Every night you can go out side a just smell strange smells and only think damn I bet thats gonna give me cancer later… US’s big biz is out of controll. It’s companies like IBM that make a difference though. You can’t be totally rightous factory wise but low power chips and systems are a plus!
Oyeah Cubeboy the next gameboy is going to be crazy. So Wii combining is really possible? Well if not in this box maybe the next? Really man think about it if Foleds really come out you’ll see super cheap lcd prices that may actualy be lower than normal tv prices! Then nintendo could really make cheap VR games, which is truely what they are shooting for.
Also too Amd and IBM are good friends chip design wise. The Opteron AMD’s workstation chip is actualy used to controll the Cell CPUs in the current super computer nodes using cell chips. Now with AIT and AMD merging there has been alot of talk about cpus with gpus on the die. Sounds familiar huh. Yeah it sounds like what IBM did with the wii chip. So The Wii is actualy part of the tech that will power the next gen for real. Why do I say this? well even though every one says the cell is more powerful. People say the same thing about nuclear power and like nuclear power the cell has the same pronlem you can really harness all of the power every( you can get 50% or more yet never a 100% due to the way it’s made with out other chips:see IBM super computer ref.). Yet the Wii is a fine tunned setup made for gaming and it sounds like it is better suited for gaming which would actualy make a better choice for a mult-chip design than the cell.
So what I’m getting at if the next nintendo has 4 to 8 cpus in it that are all basicly wii cpu and gpu chips then you would get way better preformace from a setup like that than the current cell PS3 set up which actualy take more power than a PS3. If the watts above are ture then IBM is well on it way to being able to make this chip happen.
I’m sure after this gen nintendo will go back to being a graphics whore…LOL They look to be real winners this time around early… I just hope the developers are getting coz wit nintendo.
This is not the HD gen… yeah the graphics are better but this isn’t even coming close. You need polyon count in the upper million if not billion to be worthy of HD or basicly CG type quality. Real time movie render is on it way believe me. The direct x 10 stuff is mind blowing and if you still think the PS3 is a super computer then your a cave man in the bottom of the valley awaiting to be crush by your own stone wheel.
The Wii is the NES all over again… next system will be a SNES type of jump graphicsly yet in 3d… also too wouldn’t it be nice if they would let you hook the two up together? Why have a platform if you can’t upgrade and add value? I know a few answers to that one but I’m likeing the idea of scalable hardware alot!
The Year 2048 Dont friggin do that. i didnt even read all of what you typed and i can tell you are a bad speller. I am too, but if your going on a rant, spell crap right. Anyway, thats cool, i didnt know that the wii was a power saving device. Hmm.
