Wii HD in the Future??

Nintendo Of America president Reggie Fils-Aime commented an interesting quote in a USA Today article.

“Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday,” Fils-Aime said.

The key phrase here is “at the start.” Wiis currently cannot play DVD movies, but Nintendo has already confirmed that a new model will be able to in the latter half of 2007 (in Japan at least). If we apply this logic to the “high-definition capability” statement, it seems that this might only be a temporary setback as well.

So there could be a major upgrade of the Wii to a next-gen HD format as well as a HD firmware update of 720p/1080i/1080p support once the format war becomes more clear.

I think it’s just a mistake, don’t hang on every word like that people often say things they didn’t entirely mean. However someone might make an upconverter for it. If they can do it with dvd’s why not with Wii?

now upscalling is a differant matter im sure any game developer out there can add a upscale mode were wii 480i/576i can be scalled to 1080i
and 480p wii games can be upscaled to 720p this could be applied to gamecube games aswell yes hd modes would work in upscalling but not true hd rendering as the wii was built to shine at 480p with loads of ram speed and compression tricks…..

my wii is set to 480p i have conponant cables to my new hd tv lcd by LG
my tv supports xd engine a image upgrade hardware to fake digital hd qoality from a sd anolog imput

so my 480i 576i gamecube games look closer to 720p

and my 480p wii games look like there runniong at 720p so any future hd modes in wii firmware would result in something im allready experiancing………UPSCALLED WII GRAPHICS

Wiiboy101, you need help! We’re all glad you can play your wii in a higher definiton than the rest of us, but it really isn’t something to brag so much about. Wii will never be true HD, and that doesn’t bother me one bit, come to grips people. Wii game seem to keep higher framerates than Sony and Xbox games and with decent graphics that’s enough for me. I hate it when I’m playing Motostorm at Wall-mart and see apparent framerate issues on a $600 system. I would rather it be at 480p/30-60 fps, than 1080p/15-35 fps. If you think I’m kidding watch the background when you play Motostorm(or whatever it’s called), when it jumps closer instead of smoothy comes at you like in Excite truck, you have frame rate issues.

Yeah you guys are right HD is coming in llike 5 years from nintendo, by then PS3 graphic will be stupid afforable and all HD tvs will be made from Foleds products which equals cheap and far better!

Nintendo always does this. They come out with a system do good and then improve or expand the idea. You’ll see a PS3 or xbxo 360 type of box come out of nintendo’s ard in the future. The RSX in the PS3 and the xbox 360s GPu are already old news in graphic world. The new direct x 10 stuff is the real deal and open GL is going to make a come back soon. Then we have die shrinks and then all hell breaks loose. Along with Hd expect higher samplings of the remote also and quicker response and maybe even more customizable too.

I still think they should do the console stacking Idea just for the hardcore you know(server blade style).

The fact that in the predicted time it will take for China to overtake the US as the world’s economic superpower, the US will have been the SHORTEST LIVED SUPERPOWER IN HISTORY. Hi wiiBoy/everyone

Thx for the post wiiBoy. I got a hold of a component video cable for the Wii that let me hook it up to a 41 inch HD LCD TV using Pb/Pr/Y inputs. With the Wii set to 480p graphics quality is VERY much improved. However, at certain points Wii output is garbled like the Wii isn’t putting out 480p on certain screens. For example, when connecting to shopping network. Discovered that if I temporarily set Wii screen to 4:3 instead of 16:9 (wide screen) I can avoid some of the garbled output, but not on all screens. Just curious if you have experienced this behavior as well with your setup. I am hoping that its a problem with Will firmware that will be addressed in an update as I don’t want to go back to just using the composite (yellow) video connection which doesn’t look near as good as it does when I use the component video cable. Thx in advance.

I’d read about upscailing dvd’s before but did not know that my LG tv’s “xd engine” could upscail my wii so thanks wii boy - I’ll try it.

I do have a component cable so should be able to see a benifit. I’ll let you all know.

Just like to take this oppertunity to voice my concern that the game developers mainly UBI soft are pushing out very poor games for the wii. The graphics look no better than gamecube games at present. We need to see a big improvment in future titles.
