Nintendo Wii game download service: Virtual Console

One of the most anticipated features of Wii is its game download service, dubbed the “Virtual Console.” .

Using this Virtual Console service, users will have the ability to download and play many or all Nintendo-produced NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, and N64 games for a small fee.
More notably, some games may offer free retro downloads as a bonus for the purchase. Nintendo has also announced that games developed for the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 consoles will be offered via the Virtual Console download service.

While the gameplay will be the same for all of the retro titles offered via the Virtual Console, Nintendo has stated that some of the games may be improved with sharper graphics or better framerates. In addition, gamers may be able to download games that were not originally released in their region, and some multiplayer games may be playable online, if it is technically possible.The Virtual Console service will not be used exclusively for retro games, however. Nintendo has stated that they are interested in using the service to distribute new, original content.

According to a Japanese press release, “all downloaded games will be stored on the 512 [MB] flash memory built into the system”. To prevent illegal copying, downloaded games will feature a proprietary DRM system

Oh my gosh, the Wii is SO COOL! Right now I’m waiting for it to connect to the internet. But i have almost ALL the games.. and i think my favorite would be the zelda game so far. But i’m also really excited for super smash bros and super mario galaxy. It’s AMAZING!

I’m figuering that you would have to use a “Memory Card Reader” to tranfer the games onto the “SD Card”. Anyone know the format of the “Virtual Consol” games? It would have to recognize it on the card. Anyone try loading a “Rom” onto SD?

“Can games be stored on external media such as SD cards, and what happens if you run out of storage space?

Nintendo: Games that are downloaded can be stored either to the Wii’s internal memory (512MB) or onto SD cards, which plug into the SD slot on the front of the Wii. In addition the console also stores a history of all of your downloads so that if you have to delete any VC games for any reason you could re-download them for free at a later date.”

Alright, so we know the Wii rocks. Far more innovative than the other consoles (including of course Nintendo’s others). One of the great innovations on the Wii is the virtual console and the ability to use SD cards. Very cool stuff.

But I beg you, BEG YOU to resist the temptation to “crack” the security measures in line for the Wii’s VC [Virtual Console]. I’m fairly sure that someone out there will “toy” with the security that is used to protect the games that can be downloaded, and I ask PLEASE don’t share what you learn about that.

If someone cracks the Wii and finds a way to download illegal ROMs and play them on the Wii and therefore shares that info, it will surely be the end of the VC service.

The games are only $5 to $10. Clean grandma’s back yard to earn that cash and buy the games legitimately. Don’t ruin a good thing, please!

Pfft, if I can play downloaded Roms on my Wii, it would deffinatly be a good thing, and screw VC - it should be cheaper to buy games since anyone could go to a flee market and buy 100 games for 20 bucks. I believe it’s just trial and error. download some Roms of your favorite consol, put it on your SD card via SD card reader and insert the memory card into your Wii.

I’m not 100% sure it will work, but let me know if it works for you.

If you all read your Wii manual you will find in the back warnings about not having more than 1 transmitter active at one time due to radiation concerns…The Wii is unnaceptable and not within the safe operating limits of the radiotelecommunications act of 2004 unless it is turned off…Why has nintendo released a product that emits harmfull radiation to our children?? Why dont people learn some science before we jump on every new fad that is marketed to us. Ask yourselves in 5 years why all Wii users are suffering from digital radiation poisoning. Also a good idea for those that will jump on this comment, please google some information about ‘cavity resonance’ and its effect on human biology. The wii is awesome that you can download old games.

I have the 360 and wii, 360 has way better graphics but the wii has better games (like mario and stuff). If the 360 had a sensor bar it would be better (imagine playing halo with a sensor bar.) But the xbox also has online play.
