I loved the original Crystal Chronicles, so this should be fun.

I’ve heard that for the multiplayer part, you will use the ds as a controller and map. Is this true or just a convenient rumor?

Actually the multiplayer DS controls has been scraped. Its been brought based as a single player game. More realistic look like regular FF titles. The DS version remains the same though.
